Wilhelm Schmidt (born August 5, 1923 in Duisburg ), also Willi Schmidt ; Nickname "Ömmes", is a former German soccer player and coach who belonged to Meidericher SV for 13 years.

Player career

LSV Pütnitz

From the summer of 1941, Schmidt was a member of the LSV Pütnitz , an Air Force club that existed at the time of the Second World War . For this he played in the Gauliga Pommern , in one of initially 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as a uniform top division in the German Reich , in the West division , point games.

The winner of this department emerged, he played with the team, the discharged only in the first leg Gaumeisterschaftsfinale against SV Viktoria Stolp , winner of the East Division, as this could make any game capable team and had given up the second leg. The final, won 6-1 in Stolp on March 29, 1942 , made him and his team the Gaumeister Pommern and entitled to participate in the qualifying round for the final round of the German championship. On May 10, 1942 he made his debut in this, but the 1: 3 defeat against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin meant the direct elimination of his team. In the following year the title was defended in Pomerania , but in the national championship the team based near Rügen was again defeated by the Berliner SV 1892 in the first round with 0: 2. He then remained loyal to Pütnitz until the club was dissolved in September 1944. Until then, he played three games for the club in 1942 , and one game in 1943 for the competition for the Tschammer Cup, which was newly introduced in 1935 . He made his debut on July 19, 1942 in a 2-1 first-round win at Stettiner SC , and scored his only goal on August 9, 1942 in a 3-2 second-round win over SV Neufahrwasser with the goal to make it 2-0 in the 30th minute.

Meidericher SV

After the end of the war he returned to his home in Duisburg and in 1946 was accepted into the squad of the Meidericher SV based there. He was able to quickly fight for a regular place in midfield and, with his teammates, made promotion to the 2nd Oberliga West in 1949 . In this, the Meidericher quickly gained a foothold and in 1951 they qualified for the Oberliga West , which was the top division in the regionally limited league system at the time. On August 19, 1951 (1st matchday), he made his debut at the age of 28 in a 1-1 draw against Prussia Dellbrück at the first division level and did not miss a single encounter through the 1951/52 season . Schmidt, who was preferred on the left side of midfield, presented himself so strongly that at the beginning of March 1952 he was allowed to take part in a four-day course for the senior national team ; In the end, however, it was not enough for him to work under Sepp Herberger . The team also found their way into the league in the subsequent period and even finished fourth in the table at the end of the 1952/53 season . At the end of the 1954/55 season they had to go into the second division, although in fifteenth they were only four points behind fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund .

As a result of the relegation in 1955, those responsible at MSV relied on a significant rejuvenation of the team and brought some talents from their own youth. For Schmidt, who had been a regular up until then, this meant that he was rarely called up from now on. He had a correspondingly small share in the direct return to the Oberliga West achieved in 1956 . During the 1957/58 season , the now 34-year-old managed to return to the first team for some time, only to return to the role of reservist shortly afterwards. In 1958 he ended after 118 league games in which he scored eight goals, as well as 55 second division matches in which he scored seven goals, his active football career.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his active career, he continued to work as a youth coach at Meidericher SV in 1959. In this context, he did important pioneering work with the second team of the MSV , founded in 1958 , which he led to the third-class association league Niederrhein for the 1968/69 season .

On November 14, 1960 Elmar Rösch , at the time the head coach of the Meiderichs league team, had a serious traffic accident and was temporarily unable to work. Therefore, Schmidt performed his duties for a few weeks and then returned to the youth sector. At the beginning of March 1965, the club, which had now belonged to the Bundesliga that had been founded almost two years earlier, separated from coach Rudi Gutendorf . Schmidt was head coach of the Meidericher for the second time and sat on March 6, 1965 (23rd match day) in the 2: 4 defeat in the away game against VfB Stuttgart for the first time during a Bundesliga game on the bench. He only retained his post until the end of the season 1964/65, which was completed in seventh place . This was followed by more years at the club, renamed MSV Duisburg in 1967, before he coached the first team of the Duisburg amateur club SV Duissern 1923 in the 1970s .
