Wilhelm Friedrich Karl August von Winterfeld (born March 28, 1821 in Insterburg , † February 17, 1904 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Wilhelm was a son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel Friedrich von Winterfeld (1785-1865) and his wife Mathilde, née von Schack (1800-1887).

Military career

Winterfeld visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 15, 1838, he was transferred to the 5th Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . From September 1844 to August 1847 he was a cavalry tribe of III. Battalion in the 4th Landwehr Regiment and from October 1847 commanded for one year as a training squadron. Winterfeld served as a regimental adjutant from mid-April 1850 to mid-October 1854. In the meantime promoted to Prime Lieutenant in June 1852 , Winterfeld was promoted to Rittmeister on October 7, 1854 and was commanded as a squadron leader of the 5th Heavy Landwehr Reiter Regiment from October 18, 1854. When he was appointed squadron chief , he returned to his regular regiment on March 9, 1858 and was squadron leader in the mobile 5th heavy Landwehr Reiter Regiment in 1859 during mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War . As a major and regular staff officer, Winterfeld took part in the German War of 1866 in the battles near Zwickau and Abtsdorf as well as the battle of Königgrätz . For his work he received the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords.

After the war, Winterfeld was appointed commander of the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment No. 3 on October 30, 1866 , and in this position was promoted to colonel until mid-June 1869 . He led his association during the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles at Gravelotte and Beaune-la-Rolande and in the battles at Vendôme , Azay, Villeporcher and Monnaie . Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, he was commissioned to lead the 8th Cavalry Brigade after the peace treaty under position à la suite of his regiment on August 15, 1872 . On November 2, 1872 he was appointed commander of this brigade and on September 2, 1873 he was promoted to major general . Winterfeld received in mid-September 1876 Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves and swords on rings, and three months later by awarding the character as a lieutenant general with board for disposition made.

Winterfeld had married Laura von Kurowski (1825-1875) on October 15, 1845 in Bischdorf. The following children were born from the marriage:
