Wilhelm Brauneder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Brauneder (actually Willi Brauneder ; born January 8, 1943 in Mödling ) is an Austrian lawyer and former politician ( FPÖ ). From 1980 to 2011 he was a full professor at the University of Vienna , and from 1987 to 1989 he was also the dean of the Faculty of Law . From 1996 to 1999 he was the third president of the National Council .

Life

education

After studying law at the University of Vienna, Brauneder received his doctorate in 1965. The subsequent study of political science was continued at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (business education ) and completed with a master's degree in 1972.

Scientific career

After completing his time in court, Brauneder initially worked in the disciplinary and complaints department of the Federal Ministry for National Defense . In 1967 he moved to the University of Vienna as an assistant, where he also worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law from 1970 to 1977 . 1971 by Werner Ogris supervised Habilitation with the venia legendi for the subjects "German legal history ", "German Private Law" and "Austrian Constitutional and administrative history" with the work The development of matrimonial property regimes in Austria. A contribution to the history of dogma and legal fact research in the late Middle Ages and modern times. In addition to teaching at the Faculty of Law in Vienna, Brauneder also taught at the Faculty of Humanities in Vienna between 1973 and 1977 and at the Faculty of Law at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz between 1975 and 1977 . From 1984 to 1992 Brauneder was also a lecturer at the Institute for Political Science in Vienna.

After being appointed associate professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna in 1977, Brauneder was appointed full professor in 1980. Brauneder also held visiting professorships at the University of Kansas (Lawrence / Kansas, WS 1986), the University of Paris V (WS 1991/92) and the University of Budapest in 1993 and 1994. From 1987 to 1989 Brauneder was also Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna. Until 2011 he was head of the institute for legal and constitutional history. Brauneder was also temporarily chairman of the Association for Constitutional History .

Political career

Between 1990 and 1996 Brauneder was a member of the municipal council and city council of Baden near Vienna for the FPÖ . In the legislative period from 1994 to 1996 ( XIX. GP ) he was a member of the National Council and from 1996 to 1999 ( XX. GP ) also its third president . Originally, the FPÖ proposed Martin Graf for this position at the time. However, since it became known that in November 1987 Graf was working as a room steward at an event organized by the Freedom Students' Ring (RFS) , at which the right-wing extremist German Reinhold Oberlercher appeared, Brauneder was nominated in Graf's place. Only after the latter had already been elected as third president with the votes of the ÖVP and FPÖ and against the vehement protests of the SPÖ, the information was leaked to the magazine profil that Brauneder, in his role as the responsible dean of the law faculty of the University of Vienna, was not only had approved the event, but had also known about Oberlercher's appearance in advance and was also present at the event himself (however, according to later self-presentation, only until the greeting). After the publication by the profile , quite a few MPs from the ÖVP regretted their vote for Brauneder.

In 2019 Brauneder, as chairman of the so-called " Historians' Commission of the FPÖ ", together with his colleagues in this body, presented a report that was supposed to shed light on the history of the party and in particular its involvement with National Socialism .
