Life

After moving early in his childhood, White grew up in El Dorado , Kansas. He attended the " College of Emporia " and then matriculated at the University of Kansas . In 1892 he started his first job with the daily newspaper " Kansas City Star ".

He had two children with his wife Sallie Lindsay, whom he married on April 27, 1893; William Lindsay White (1900–1973) and Mary White (1904–1921). After the death of Mary, who had an accident in a riding accident, her father published the editorial "Mary White" in her memory on August 17, 1921 .

In 1895 he bought the Emporia Gazette for $ 3,000 and published the editorial in that newspaper on August 16, 1896, “ What's the Matter With Kansas? ". With this article, both his public image and his reputation in the Republican Party rose .

Political commitment

In the 1890s, the future US President Theodore Roosevelt and White developed a close friendship that lasted until Roosevelt's death in 1919. The two were responsible for the founding of the Progressive Party in 1912 , which saw itself as an opposition to the established forces of Republican President William Howard Taft . White ran for governor of Kansas as an independent in 1924 and finished third with 22.7 percent of the vote, behind victorious Republican Ben Paulen (49 percent) and Democratic incumbent Jonathan M. Davis (27.7 percent). He then rejoined the Republicans and supported President Herbert Hoover in 1932 in his unsuccessful re-election attempt against Franklin D. Roosevelt .

In the last quarter of his life he was known as the "Voice of the Midwest ". Aware of the importance of White, President Roosevelt asked him to publicly promote the support of the Allies and thus the entry of the United States into World War II . Roosevelt did not please unheard and White in 1940 co-founded the Committee for the Defense of America by supporting the Allies ( "Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies - CDAAA"). It worked for the "CDAAA" until his death.
