Wílmar Enrique Barrios Terán (born October 16, 1993 in Cartagena ) is a Colombian football player . The defensive midfielder has been playing for Zenit St. Petersburg in the Russian Premier League since January 2019 and has been the Colombian international since September 2016 .

Career

Barrios began his professional career with the Colombian club Deportes Tolima in the top division of Colombia. In 2013 he was promoted to the professional squad, but still played mainly for the Reserve Tolimas. Barrios made his debut for the team on February 23, 2013. In the 3-0 defeat against Boyacá Chicó , he was in the starting line-up, but flew in the 78th minute after yellow-red from the square. Only in the next season was Barrios used more often and ultimately came to 36 league appearances.

On August 25, 2016, Wílmar Barrios moved to the top Argentine club Boca Juniors . A transfer fee of 2.6 million euros was due for the Colombian. He made his debut on October 29, 2016, in a 4-0 win over CA Temperley .

On February 1, 2019, Wílmar Barrios moved to the Russian first division club Zenit St. Petersburg for a transfer fee of 15 million euros , where he signed a 4½-year contract. He made his debut on March 2, 2019 (18th matchday) in a 1-0 away win against Ural Yekaterinburg . His first goal came just two weeks later in a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow . He quickly established himself as a regular player and played in 10 league games during the remainder of the 2018/19 season . He made a significant contribution to the Senittschiki championship .

National team

Wílmar Barrios made his debut for Colombia on September 7, 2016 , when he was on the field for full time against Brazil.

Barrios was part of the Colombian selection that represented the nation at the 2018 World Cup in Russia . There he was used in a group game and he was also in the round of 16 against England . There Colombia failed on penalties against the Three Lions . In this game Barrios and Colombia were particularly negative for fouls. Among other things, referee Mark Geiger gave Wilmar Barrios a yellow card for a headbutt against Jordan Henderson after video evidence.
