Wittwulf Y Malik (born August 5, 1946 in Hersbruck ) is a German musician , composer , visual artist and performance artist .

Wittwulf Y Malik's family fled after the Second World War from Königsberg and lived in a row in Velden (Pegnitz) , Planegg and from 1954 in Hamburg , where his father worked as a school teacher. Malik attended the Johanneum School of Academics and graduated from high school there in 1967.

At the age of five he was taught the piano and violin by his father . In 1961 he switched to the cello and from 1967 studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater and at the Detmold University of Music a . a. Violoncello with Arthur Troester , theory of forms with Diether de la Motte and music history with Hermann Rauhe . At the same time he studied the subject "Rhythmic-Musical Education" and completed private training in the body therapies eutonia and respiratory therapy .

This was followed by a degree in psychology from 1972 to 1976 at the Universities of Hamburg and Zurich . During this time he worked as an improvisation, breathing and voice teacher at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg , Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Neumarkt-Theater . In the 1970s he completed private Zen Buddhist studies with Philip Kapleau in the USA . The Japanese-Buddhist graphic studies with brush and ink as part of the painting ceremonies laid the foundation for the graphic composition notation that he later developed .

Malik returned to Hamburg in 1976 and has since worked as a cellist (including solo cellist in the Hamburg Mozart Orchestra under Robert Stehli ), composer, visual artist and performance artist in the context of multimedia experimental projects.

Since 1981 Malik has appeared internationally with his compositions and performances, including at numerous international festivals - a. a. in Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the USA.

World premieres of his works took place among others:   Stadttheater Gießen , Hamburger Kunsthalle , TiK Thalia Theater , Kampnagel ,   Hamburger Kunstverein , Kulturzentrum Gasteig , Schloss Agathenburg , Schloss Plüschow , Altes Magazin Hannover , Universität Lüneburg , Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , 37th Nordic Film Festival Lübeck , international affairs Film & Video Festival Aarau (2009) and at various other festivals.

Malik has taught at numerous institutions in various fields: music at the Hamburg Conservatory , the University of Münster and the University of California San Diego ; Theater Studies at the University of Giessen and the University of Frankfurt ; Film at the Bremen University of the Arts ; Dance at Philadelphia University and art education at Lüneburg University .

Malik lives and works in the Künstlerhaus Hamburg-Bergedorf . He has a son from his marriage to the painter Beate Wassermann and three children from a later relationship with the actress Johanna Maria Höppl.

Artistic work with sound and images

On the basis of his symbol painting studies, Malik developed his own graphic notation, which allows the interpreter more freedom for his own interpretations. He kept this writing form for his compositions as his most important for many more years. Works in this notation have been exhibited worldwide. Malik's works are about connections between the various arts that seek to create mutual inspiration and condensation. He created works in cooperation with writers, filmmakers, actors and dancers.

Sound performances

Numerous sound performances were created using a wide variety of sounds and noises from different cultures and nature. Recordings of these sounds were then either played in pure form with live instrumental music or chorally mounted on tape beforehand, later processed on the computer and used as musical material.

Malik developed a new, expanded sound language on the cello through improvisations and was invited to the Opera Suite project at documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982 .

In 1986, Malik expanded his work with graphic notations with brush and ink to include the dimension of photography by recording landscape structures, examining them for their patterns, which were then transferred into brush notation and became the template for music to be played. The current sounds of the respective photo situation were recorded with a microphone and tape and displayed with the computer method of 3D Fast Fourier sound analysis in such a way that the sounds can be seen in their overtone structures and their course. At an exhibition, this work can be seen and heard (interpreted live or via feed), so that the original photo situation and the concert and exhibition situation cross over.

As an early and important work of this kind, TRANSART / 7X7 Neuenkirchen op. 87 was created in 1994 with 28 processed paper webs and a sound performance for female voice, wind instruments, percussion and 7 tapes.

Cross-genre works

Malik produced music for theater productions, a. a. for the Stadttheater Gießen . He created his own audio plays and music for radio plays by other authors as well as music for literary projects, etc. a. in 1988 to readings with the writer Peter Rühmkorf and at the literature festival NRW in the Spiegelzelt in Düsseldorf.

He had various live performances with the butoh dancer Tadashi Endo a. a. 1983 on the Rathausmarkt in Hamburg. In 1995 he produced the music for the dance film talking bodies with the dance theater ensemble area retina . He also produced music for dance theater pieces by the dancer and choreographer Hans Fredeweß in Hanover.

Experimental music videos

Malik also makes experimental music videos. In an early video experiment, charcoal drawings with underlaid texts by the Bauhaus architect and artist Bruno Taut are shown at a slow pace , and music for the female voice and electronic and electro-acoustic sounds produced by Malik are played. The work premiered in 2000 at the symposium on dance and architecture in the Hamburg Architecture Center .

In 2006 she produced her first own experimental music video Selfportrait for Bethlehem . For a portrait photo of a cello sound performance in the river bed of the Peccia (processed into a light-dark process in the computer), the added cello music creates the atmosphere of the room.
