history
Woolwich was organized on October 20, 1759 as a district and on August 23, 1775 as an independent town. The town was named after Woolwich in England . The area was settled from 1638, but the settlement in Woolwich was also destroyed by attacks by the Indians and some of the settlers were killed. A dam was built at the Nequasset, which enabled grist, saw and fulling mills to be operated. The abundance of allis shad was a basic food source for the population.
The population wanted to separate from Georgetown in 1754 and found their own town, but this was initially rejected because Woolwich had no church and no priest at the time. The Nequasset Congregational Church was founded in 1759. It was the first Protestant church east of the Kennebec River. The town's assemblies were held in the church building until 1761.
