The 2011/12 season of the Vysschaya Hockey League is the 20th season of the second highest Russian ice hockey league and the second since the VHL was founded.

Changes compared to the previous year

mode

The 22 teams of the Vysschaya Hockey League were divided into two conferences before the season according to regional criteria. After the plane crash near Yaroslavl , Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the Continental Hockey League waived participation in the 2011/12 KHL season due to the death of almost the entire professional squad . Instead, the team took part with a team consisting mainly of young players later than the competition in the game operation of the WHL. The 22 regular teams of the WHL each played 52 games against each other, as well as one game against Lokomotive Yaroslavl, which consequently played 22 games. As a visiting team of the Western Conference - but not part of this - Yaroslavl played his home games against the teams of the Western Conference and his away games against the teams of the Eastern Conference. Due to the shortened game schedule for Yaroslavl, it was decided not to determine the playoff participants in the western conference by points, but by percentage points, whereby the two division winners were automatically determined as the group first of the western conference. The eight best teams from each conference then qualify for the playoffs in which the second division champions are played out. Each team receives three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after extra time, one point for a loss after extra time and zero points for a loss after regular time.
