The 1986 Vysschaya League was the 49th season of the highest Soviet football league. It began on March 1 and ended on December 7, 1986.

The end of the season was planned for November 22, 1986. However, Dynamo Kiev had to make up three more games. The last of them on December 7th against Dynamo Moscow, which led the table before the game. Kiev won this match 2-1 and thus secured the Soviet football championship for the twelfth time.

mode

Participants were the best 16 teams from the previous season. These played against each other twice. The last two teams were relegated. The number of draws for which a team received points was limited to ten draws. However, Dynamo Kiev and Dnieper Dnjepropetrovsk were exempt from this regulation, as they turned off at least two players for the Soviet national football team .
