The Klass A 1960 was the 22nd season of the highest Soviet football league. It started on April 9th ​​and ended on October 24th, 1960.

Torpedo Moscow won the Soviet football championship for the first time by three points ahead of Dynamo Kiev .

mode

The number of participants was increased to 22. In addition to Admiralteyets Leningrad, who have been promoted to sport, nine other clubs have been admitted according to geopolitical criteria, none of whose republics have been involved so far. Only clubs from Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan and Turkmenistan did not take part.

The eleven teams in each group initially played against each other twice. In the second phase, the clubs were divided into four groups depending on their placement. The first three played for the championship and places two to six. The following three in the next group. The worst-placed Russian team was relegated directly, while the worst Ukrainian team played relegation matches against the winner from the Ukraine II zone.
