The Klass A 1961 was the 23rd season of the highest Soviet football league. It began on April 8th and ended on October 24th, 1961.
Dynamo Kiev won the Soviet football championship for the first time by four points ahead of Torpedo Moscow .
mode
The season was conducted in a two-tier format. The 22 teams initially played against each other twice in two groups of eleven teams each. After this phase, the five best clubs qualified for the championship round, the bottom six played in the placement round. The results from the first round were adopted. The bottom of the table had to go into relegation. From this season onwards, the goal difference applied in the event of a tie .
