Vyszhaya League 1988

The Wysschaja Liga 1989 was the 52nd and thus third last season of the highest Soviet football league. It was also the last season in which teams from Georgia and Lithuania competed, as both countries declared themselves independent as early as 1990 and created their own football leagues. Master was Spartak Moscow with his then new coach Oleg Romanzew , and drove with it the twelfth title in the club's history. Vice champion was defending champion Dnepr Dnepropetrovsk .

Zenit Leningrad and Lokomotiv Moscow had to descend . While Leningrad was lagging behind in last place, the move to the second class for Lokomotive only decided on the last day of the game, when they only won 1-0 in a direct duel against Shakhtar Donetsk, who was also in acute danger of relegation , and because of the balanced direct comparison due to the worse ones Goal difference relegation.

The first game of the season took place on March 11th, the season ended with the last game on October 27th.

The 16 teams each played against each other twice. The last two teams were relegated. The rule that teams received points only for the first ten draws was abolished.

    After the season

Since the Lithuanian and Georgian Soviet republic insisted more and more on state independence, football clubs from these republics no longer competed in the Soviet football championship from the 1990 season . In the Wysschaja Liga this affected Žalgiris Vilnius , Dinamo Tiflis and Guria Lantschchuti (promoted from the Pervaya League in 1989), who had all qualified for the Wysschaja League in 1990. Žalgiris first played in the Baltic League in 1990, in 1991 in the Lithuanian A Lyga , Guria Lantschchuti and Dinamo Tbilisi in the Umaghlessi League . In the 1990 season, only 13 teams played in the Vysschaya League.
