The Vysschaja Liga 1981 was the 44th season of the highest Soviet football league. It began on March 25th and ended on November 11th, 1981.

Defending champions Dynamo Kiev won the Soviet football championship for the tenth time with a seven point lead over Spartak Moscow.

The 18 teams each played against each other twice. The teams in places 16 and 17 were relegated. Pachtakor Tashkent was spared relegation for three years due to the disaster in 1979 . The number of draws for which a team received points was limited to ten draws.
