Cesare Zavattini (born September 20, 1902 in Luzzara , † October 13, 1989 in Rome ) was an Italian screenwriter and theorist of neorealism .

Life

Born in Luzzara, near Reggio nell'Emilia , in northern Italy, he studied law at the University of Parma , but devoted himself to writing. In 1930 he moved to Milan and worked for the book and magazine publisher Angelo Rizzoli . After Rizzoli began making films in 1934, Zavattini received his first scriptwriting assignments in 1936. Three years later he met Vittorio De Sica , with whom he made over two dozen films, including such masterpieces of Italian neorealism as shoe shiners ( Sciuscià , 1946), bicycle thieves ( Ladri di Biciclette , 1948), The Miracle of Milan ( Miracolo in Milano , 1951) and Umberto D. (1952). For the joint book project Un Paese ("A Village"), Zavattini wrote texts about his place of birth for the black and white photographs of Paul Strand .

During his career he worked with over 80 directors, including Michelangelo Antonioni , Alessandro Blasetti , Mauro Bolognini , Mario Camerini , René Clement , Federico Fellini , Pietro Germi , Alberto Lattuada , Mario Monicelli , Elio Petri , Dino Risi , Roberto Rossellini , Mario Soldati and Luchino Visconti .

Zavattini died in Rome on October 13, 1989.

Awards

Zavattini has been nominated for an Oscar three times . Four times he received the Silver Ribbon of the Professional Association of Italian Film Journalists. In 1982 he was finally awarded a Golden Lion for his life's work at the Venice Film Festival .
