Zdob și Zdub ( Cyrillic spelling: Здоб ши Здуб; also called Zdob si Zdub or Zdob shi Zdub) is a musical group from the Republic of Moldova . It has existed since 1994 and was founded by Roman Iagupov, Mihai Gîncu and Anatol Pugaci in Strășeni, a suburb of Chișinău . The name is an onomatopoeia of a drumbeat.

Their music is a mixture of, among other things, elements of rock , punk rock and hip hop combined with local folklore . They have already appeared as the opening act for internationally known bands such as Rage Against the Machine or Biohazard .

Her song lyrics range from socially critical content to stories from life and everyday life to humorous and comical texts.

history

1994

When the band was founded in 1994, they still performed in various formations. Her initial sound could be assigned to hardcore punk , the lyrics of her songs were mostly in Russian . The group played their first time at an event called "10 Years After Chernobyl " in Chişinău. In November 1994 they recorded their first demo tape and played at the " Learn to swim 1 " festival in Moscow, where they also appeared for the first time under the name "Zdob și Zdub".

1996

In July 1996 they opened up for Rage Against the Machine at the festival " Learn to swim 2 " with the songs В доме моем (V dome moiom, "In my house") in Russian and Hardcore Moldovenesc (Moldovan Hardcore) in Romanian . The song Hardcore Moldovenesc became a hit a little later and contributed significantly to the group's popularity. In the same year Zdob și Zdub signed a contract with the Russian record company FeeLee and released their debut album Hardcore Moldovenesc .

1998

Around 1998 their sound began to change, the songs were given elements of local folklore and the lyrics were mainly performed in Romanian.

1999

In May 1999 her second album was released under the name Tabăra Noastră ("Our Camp"). On August 14, 1999, Zdob și Zdub played at the Russian MTV party that was held on Red Square in Moscow , along with Russian bands such as Gorky Park and IFK, as well as the American Red Hot Chili Peppers .

2000

In October 2000, the group recorded a cover version of the song Видели ночь (Videli still, "We saw the night") by the Russian band Kino . With this song they took part in the tribute album КИНОпробы (KINOproby, "KINOprobe") for the late poet, actor and frontman of the group Kino, Viktor Zoi . The cover became a hit across the Commonwealth of Independent States and stayed at number one on the charts in many CIS countries throughout the year . About half a million of the tribute albums were sold. The band had many guest appearances during this time, as a result of which they were named the best live band of 2000 in Russia by the St. Petersburg music magazine Fuzz .

The band toured extensively and continues to do so, mainly in Russia , Ukraine , Moldova and Romania , but also in Germany (1998), the Netherlands (2000) and, more recently, Serbia , Hungary and Italy .

2001

On January 31, 2001, Zdob și Zdub performed together with the musician and director Emir Kusturica and his “ No Smoking Orchestra ” in Moscow. On October 12, 2001, the album Agroromantica , which means something like "country romance", was presented to the public in Club Б-2 (B-2) in Moscow. The video for her song Bună Dimineaţa! (“Good morning!”), The content of which is supposed to be an ironic evocation of the land romance of the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union and its satellites, was named Romanian video clip of the year (2001) at the Telefest Festival in Timişoara in Romania. The following year the group won the equivalent MTV Romania Video Music Award for Ţiganii şi OZN ("The Gypsy and the UFO").

2003

In 2003, her song Everybody in the Case Mare was played in the opening and closing credits of the short film Călătorie la oraş ( A trip to the city ) by the Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu . On November 24th of the same year a new album called 450 de oi (450 sheep) was released.

2004

In July 2004 the album 450 de oi reached 12th place in the World Music Charts Europe . In October 2004 the group worked in their studio on a new album, which should be dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the band. The 10 best songs of the last 10 years and 5 new tracks went into the album, in the opinion of Zdob și Zdub.

2005

On February 26, 2005, the band won a national competition that enabled them to compete in Moldova for the first time in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Bunica bate toba (Cyrillic: Буникa бaте тoбa, also called Boonika; in German: “Grandma beats the Drum ”) in Kiev . On May 19, they reached the semifinals from fourth place on the grid, with 207 points in second place. In the qualification for the final, Zdob și Zdub started in 7th place. On May 21, they reached the 6th place with 148 points in the final round.

2007

On September 30, 2007 Zdob și Zdub appeared in Michael Palin's New Europe , the program aired on BBC 1 in the UK . Also in 2007, a mashup music video with the name Black Eyed Peace [sic] ft Zdob şi Zdub - Don't Mess with Inima Mea appeared on the Internet, which was a mix of the song Don't Phunk with My Heart by Black Eyed Peas with elements of the Song DJ Vasile performed by Zdob și Zdub and gained some popularity.

2009

In 2009 the group released the song На речке, на речке (Na rechke, na rechke, "On the river, on the river") for the project СОЛЬ (Solj, "salt") on the Russian radio station Наше Радио (Nasche Radio , "Our radio"). СОЛЬ is a project of the broadcaster Наше Радио, in which more or less well-known and mostly younger rock musicians from the CIS take part. In December 2009, Zdob și Zdub recorded the track Телега (Telega, "wagon") for the tribute album Машинопись (Maschinopisj, "Typewriter"), dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Russian band " Maschina Wremeni " ("Time Machine") .

2011

In February 2011 the band was again granted the right to represent Moldova at the Eurovision Song Contest, this time in Düsseldorf , with the song So Lucky (So ​​Glücklich). On May 12th they reached the second semi-final from 7th place on the grid with 54 points and 10th place, with which they qualified again for the final. Starting from 15th starting position, they reached 12th place in the final with 97 points.
