Zolfo Springs is a city in Hardee County in the US state of Florida with 1827 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Zolfo Springs is on the Peace River . The city is located about 5 km south of Wauchula and about 100 km southwest of Tampa .
history
In 1886 the Florida Southern Railway built a railway line from Lakeland via today's Zolfo Springs to Punta Gorda , which was integrated into the Plant System in 1892 . The city itself was officially founded in 1904.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 1,827 inhabitants were distributed over 718 households. The population density was 468.5 inh / km². 64.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.2% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 26.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.1% to several ethnic groups. 64.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 47.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 31.0% of all households. 79.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.49 people and the average family size was 3.82 people.
36.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 30 years. 51.7% of the population were male and 48.3% were female.
The median annual income was $ 33,403, with 43.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 45.58% of the population and 54.42% spoke Spanish .
