The railway company set up a depot in the area of today's city in 1886 (the building is still standing today) and named it Wauchula. The name is derived from the Indian word Wa-tu-la-ha-kee ( Hitchiti-Mikasuki language ). A village that was part of Manatee County soon emerged around the depot . The city limits were defined in 1902, a time when Wauchula grew rapidly. In 1926 the old town hall was built.
