The Salzburg Zoo (formerly Tiergarten Salzburg or Tiergarten Hellbrunn ) is south of the Austrian city of Salzburg . The 14 hectare area is part of the historic palace park of Hellbrunn Palace and borders the municipality of Anif in the south . The zoo keeps around 1500 animals of 150 species and employs around 50 people. The number of visitors is around 300,000 annually.

history

Markus Sittikus' coat of arms on the entrance building

In 1421 a "Peunt pey dem Tirgarten" is called, which in 1459 was owned by Petrus Erlacher. The zoo was to be understood as an aristocratic hunting reserve. In 1479 a "Neubruch propte Tiergarten et fontem" is mentioned. From 1612 onwards, the Archbishop of Salzburg, Markus Sittikus, had Hellbrunn Palace built with its large game park around Hellbrunn Mountain and its bird enclosure around the pheasantry in the north of the palace. The prince-archbishop's game gate no longer existed after the fall of the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the shooting of the wild animals by a French general in December 1800.

In memory of the historic hunting reserve, the zoo was opened to visitors in 1961 as a mountain world zoo under the sponsorship of the Friends of Salzburg Zoo, Hellbrunn , whereby the local (Alpine) wildlife was to be brought closer to the public. The zoo should be fully integrated into the historic palace garden. In 1966 Heinrich Windischbauer founded a griffon vulture colony, which still exists today and is a major attraction. The griffon vulture is native to southern Europe in particular. In the Hohe Tauern National Park each year spend the summer 50-100 non-breeding Griffon Vultures from Croatia. There are contacts between the animals in Hellbrunn and those in the Hohe Tauern .

1972 was a year of crisis for the zoo, which was outlawed internationally for violating the import ban on orangutans . In 1976 Friedrich Lacchini took over the management, the city and state of Salzburg secured the financial situation of the zoo. After taking office in 1990, Lacchini's successor, Rainer Revers, turned away from the concept of a mountain zoo that would be integrated into the historic castle park and introduced today's geozoo . In 2003 the former sponsoring association Salzburger Tiergarten Hellbrunn was converted into Zoo Salzburg Gemeinnützige  GmbH, which is owned 50:50 by the state and city of Salzburg . Sabine Grebner has been managing director since 2005.

In 2012 the zoo came under fire for safety deficits: cheetahs and a little later a lynx escaped from their enclosures twice in a row. Because of the danger to the zoo visitors, the public prosecutor's office started investigations against the zoo boss. 220,000 euros were invested in an escape-proof conversion of the cheetah enclosure. When a female cheetah managed to bypass the barriers again in April 2014, Sabine Grebner declared that she would not extend her contract, which expired at the end of the year. However, she reapplied for the post and remained managing director.

Zoo concept

The Salzburg Zoo, which is now a Geozoo, is an important educational institution. He tries to better meet the demands of zoo animals on their habitat by enriching and changing their environment. Keeping different animal species in one facility is intended to increase contact between the species.

The zoo has repeatedly cooperated with the natural science faculty of the University of Salzburg in the context of scientific projects .

The zoo is divided by continent as follows:

Eurasia

The brown bear enclosure is classically bounded by a moat.

The northern part of the zoo is dedicated to the fauna of the double continent of Eurasia. The facility for alpine ibex was redesigned in 2012. It now enables closer contact with the animals. In addition, a terrarium was created for the domestic smooth snake . The enclosures for wolverines , European brown bears , otters and chamois are located on the steep slope of Hellbrunn Mountain . Inside the bear house, habitats of the house mouse and house rat are staged as uninvited guests under one roof with human roommates. The European part of the park also includes the facilities for European wolves and forest reindeer as well as the feeding area for the free-flying griffon vultures. The public favorite was the female griffon vulture Gundula, bred at the Alpine Zoo in Innsbruck, who came to Salzburg in 1979. She died at the age of 39 in November 2018.

Representatives of the East Asian fauna are shown with the red panda , Chinese muntjac and white-hand gibbon . The system for these three species was redesigned from December 2013 to May 2015, the gibbon house was replaced by a new building. The enclosures for the snow leopards and the tigress who died in autumn 2013 are still in the row of the old predator outdoor enclosures .

In Ark zoo mainly live endangered breeds , including Mangalitzaschwein , forest sheep , Peacock goat and Appenzeller Spitzhauben . Outside of the petting zoo, there is the possibility of petting alpacas, African dwarf goats and Cameroon sheep and feeding them with special feed.

America

The “night zoo” in August / September makes observing nocturnal species such as the maned wolf more rewarding.

The gibbon, the Tropical and the South America house spread over three small animal houses, - - in the park part (South) America will be more representative of the Primate shown: cotton top tamarin , Emperor Tamarin , golden-headed lion tamarin , Pygmy Marmoset , Bolivian squirrel monkey and tufted capuchin . The tamarins, which have been associated with the green iguana and - since 2016 - with glasses-leaf noses, can move around freely in the tropical house. In addition to the monkeys, typical representatives of South American fish , amphibians and reptiles as well as the southern spherical armadillo live in the South America House . A two- toed sloth has been housed in the gibbon house since July 2015.

An American rodents are black-tailed prairie dogs , Large Maras and capybaras held. Nandu and alpaca are associated with the maras . Other representatives of the South American bird world are macaws and chile flamingos . With the lowland tapirs that have been kept since 2011, the zoo participates in the European conservation breeding program. Collar peccaries are shown as representatives of the New World pigs . The maned wolves currently inhabit the old tiger enclosure.

The facilities for the South American predators were renewed in 2013. In the new Jaguar house next live Jaguar and Puma also Königsboa and smooth-fronted caiman . The decoration of the interior is based on a jungle landscape with Mayan architecture.

Australia

The community facility for emus and Bennett kangaroos in the southeastern zoo area was abandoned. Today the zoo keeps parma kangaroos and some typical insects from the Australian continent . The former lynx enclosure, which served as temporary alternative quarters for gibbons and capuchin monkeys during the renovation phases, was converted into a walk-in enclosure for budgies and diamond pigeons in 2016 . The focus here is not on species protection, but on the direct encounter between humans and animals and the aspect of species-appropriate private keeping. The 180 m² aviary, costing around 20,000 euros, was financed by donations and the zoo's friends' association.

Africa

White rhinos on the African savannah

The Savannah facility for white rhino , Grevy's zebras , sable antelope and lychee waterbuck in Africa is part of more than one hectare of land, the largest enclosure of the zoo. A group of ring-tailed lemurs , which can move freely around the zoo, can usually be found near the rhino house. In the adjacent bird park , which is criss-crossed by watercourses, you can see red chalk pelicans , paradise and crowned cranes , guinea fowl and sitatungas . Not all species in the bird park occur on the African continent, such as the red-crowned crane or the sun ducks that have been kept since 2017 .

The Salzburg Zoo became famous for its cheetah enclosure with its prey simulator, which can travel at 60 km / h: a piece of fresh meat was transported across the large enclosure with a converted drag lift . So the cheetahs had an incentive to move around a lot like in the wild and to practice their hunting behavior. However, the system has not been in operation for a long time.

In 2010 the lion house was completed. The structure is deliberately kept low. From the roof to provide insight into the savannah plant in one hand and the lion gehege and in a community facility for hogs and diana monkey on the other. Inside the lion house, examples of animals from the various vegetation zones in tropical Africa are presented, including jeweled tree frogs , day geckos , panther chameleons , harlequin quails and short-eared elephants . There are also facilities for zebra mongooses and spurred turtles in Africa . An aviary for African gray parrots, which could no longer be modernized, was given up in order to enlarge the turtle enclosure in 2016.

In 2019/2020 a 300 m² facility for African penguins was built north of the rhinoceros facility for 1.3 million euros .

The former Community system for Bactrian camels and Przewalski's horse, which was already physically separated from the Eurasia region was transformed into a "African village" after the three remaining Przewalski horses in March 2017 the Belgian animal park Domaine des grottes de Han were moved . The new facility with typical domestic animals from Africa ( Watussi cattle , domestic donkeys , Boer goats ) and porcupines opened in March 2018.
