Zygmunt Haupt (born March 5, 1907 in Ułaszkowce , Podolia (now Ukraine ), † May 10, 1975 in Winchester , Virginia , USA ) was a Polish painter, writer and architect. In the twentieth century his literary work (mainly reports, essays and short stories) was known almost exclusively among Polish emigrants in the West. For some time now, thanks to the activities of his publisher Andrzej Stasiuk , his work has come back into the public eye.

Life

Zygmunt Haupt grew up in a Polish family in Podolia (now Ukraine). He first went to primary school in Tarnopol before at the high school Jarosław High School made. He then began to study engineering at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów , which he broke off to study architecture . In 1928 he moved to Paris to study urban studies at the Sorbonne from 1931 to 1932 . It was there that he began working as a painter and writer. He returned to Poland from Paris and took an active part in the cultural life of the city of Lwów before he was drafted into the 10th Cavalry Brigade in 1939.

During the Second World War he took part as a sergeant in a unit of the motorized artillery. After the occupation of eastern Poland by the USSR , its subunit fled to Hungary . Haupt came to France from an internment camp. He survived the Battle of Dunkirk on the Allied side and was evacuated to Great Britain on the MS Batory , where he continued to serve in the Polish Army in Gosford and London . There he met his future wife, an American.

In 1946 Zygmunt Haupt moved to the USA with his wife and son , first to New Orleans and then to New York in 1951 to work for the Voice of America . There he also edited the newly founded Polish émigré magazine "Ameryka" and published in English in the magazines "Accent", "Nassau Review", "Furioso", "The Paris Review" and "New Directions".

Haupt died on May 10, 1975 in Winchester, Virginia, after a heart attack and stroke . He was in the cemetery of Metairie in Louisiana buried.

Aftermath

The writer's literary estate is kept at Stanford University . Since September 2015, at the suggestion of the writer and publisher Andrzej Stasiuk, the Zygmunt Main Festival (“Festiwal im. Zygmunta Haupta”) has been taking place in Gorlice and Szymbark .
