The iPhone 3G is the second smartphone the iPhone series of US company Apple . The device is mainly operated by touching the finger on the multi-touch screen . It was unveiled on June 9, 2008 as part of WWDC 2008 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco .

Apple's iOS operating system is used on the iPhone 3G . Version 2.0 was included when it was introduced, the highest version supported by Apple is 4.2.1. This was published on November 22, 2010. Subsequent iOS versions no longer support the iPhone 3G.

From July 11, 2008, the device was delivered in parallel in 21 countries, including Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Sales began in France on July 17th . On June 7, 2010, a few weeks before the iPhone 4 was released , official sales ceased.

The device has a back made of black plastic. The 16-gigabyte model was also available in white.

Compared to the previous model, the corners were rounded and the device was thicker. The reason given for this was better reception performance with lower energy consumption.

Technical specifications

Main processor

The iPhone 3G uses an ARM11 processor manufactured by Samsung , which is clocked at 412 MHz. The name of the system-on-a-chip that this processor is on is S5L8900 . This is the same processor as the first iPhone and the iPod touch the first generation . The processor supports ARMv6 , a 32-bit architecture.

Cellular communications and networking

As announced by Steve Jobs in September 2007, the communication capabilities of the iPhone have been expanded. The most important innovation was the support of UMTS mobile radio. It is also possible to use HSDPA , an improvement on UMTS, provided this is supported by the network .

Digital camera and memory

The iPhone 3G has (depending on the model) an 8 or 16 GB NAND flash memory for data as well as a working memory of 128 MB. After the introduction of the iPhone 3GS, only the 8GB version was produced.

Positioning

With the built-in GPS module it is possible to determine the exact position and display it in Google Maps ; An active internet connection is required to access the map material. Some critics complained that the GPS antenna was too small for an exact location - however, many tests reported pinpoint location. criticism

After the update to software version iOS 4 in June 2010, massive performance problems occurred with the iPhone 3G. Compared to the previous software iPhoneOS 3.1.3, it only responded half as fast to inputs. This problem is due to the expansion of the functionality of iOS 4. Although Apple does not activate many functions on the iPhone 3G, the main processor is still not strong enough and the working memory of 128 MB is too small to provide an appealing usability of iOS 4. The user memory for the iPhone 3G, also resulting from this problem, is only 84 MB in iOS 4; This is not sufficient for the Springboard and additionally running apps . Apple tried to improve the performance with updates, but the improvements were only moderate, so Apple was sued for lies and deceit regarding the performance of the iPhone 3G. The 2nd generation iPod touch , which is the iPod touch counterpart to the iPhone 3G, was not so affected by this problem as it uses a different SoC ( S5L8720 ), which has a more powerful architecture than the S5L8900 of the iPhone 3G and is also operated with a higher clock frequency, which results in better performance.

A large number of users complained about poor reception and connection problems with the iPhone 3G. There is no explanation from Apple on this subject. In August 2008, suspicions were reported that the problems could have been caused by immature UMTS chipsets supplied by Infineon .
