(18243) Gunn is an asteroid located in the inner main belt , which was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.857 km (± 0.069). The albedo of 0.431 (± 0.081) indicates a light surface.
The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (18243) Gunn belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .
(18243) Gunn was named on January 7, 2004 after the American astrophysicist James E. Gunn (* 1938).
