(2596) Vainu Bappu ( 1979 KN ) is an approximately eleven kilometers large asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on May 19, 1979 by the Danish astronomer Richard Martin West at the La Silla Observatory on La Silla in La Higuera in Chile ( IAU- Code 809) was discovered.

designation

(2596) Vainu Bappu was named after the Indian astronomer MK Vainu Bappu (1927–1982), who was a friend of the explorer Richard Martin West. During his education at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology , he founded the first modern observatory in India in the 1950s, Nainital ( Nainital ). In 1960 he was appointed director of the Kodaikanal Observatory , and subsequently founded and headed an astrophysics institute in Bengaluru . He was Vice President from 1967 to 1973 and President of the International Astronomical Union from 1979 to 1982 and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics .
