action

Balkans 1913, end of the second Balkan War . The soldiers of the Ottoman army , Veli and Mehmet Ali, are on their way home with Turkish refugees from Rumelia . They return to their Anatolian hometown, where they work as shepherds and teachers .

August 1914. A poster is looking for volunteers for the military because the fatherland is in danger. Mehmet Ali's little brother also wants to get in touch, but has to stay at home due to his age. The mayor had already warned of imminent danger. The two veterans report and attend a sergeant's course . The trainer explains to the participants that nothing is more powerful than the love of home.

November 1914. Veli and Ali are stationed with their unit at the Dardanelles, where British and French naval units are provocative. The Royal Navy uses its most powerful warship , the dreadnought HMS Queen Elizabeth . A leading Ottoman officer sees it as a declaration of war . But the Ottoman army lacks ammunition for from Germany originating guns because Bulgaria blocked the import. The officers realize that the Western powers want to treat the Ottoman Empire like a colony and rob land, but everyone is ready to fight for the motherland. German Mauser rifles arrive just in time to replace the unusable Martini rifles . The soldiers are delighted; You can even hit mosquitoes with the new weapons .

March 18, 1915. 18 British and French battleships , "floating fortresses" attack. The cannon carts are destroyed in this position , so that the heavy grenades can no longer be transported and the guns are paralyzed. The sturdy private Seyit agrees to carry the individual grenades alone on his back. With superhuman strength, Seyit manages to carry three grenades, which hit the French battleship Bouvet badly. It has to withdraw from the battle line, runs into a sea mine and sinks.

The Entente powers under the newly arrived General Hamilton are massively strengthened by colonial troops from India and volunteers from Australia and New Zealand . But this does not intimidate Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal Bey , but encourages his subordinates: "We are awakening!" The Ottoman officers, however , do not trust their German superior, General Liman von Sanders , who is also the Ottoman Marshal . He only commanded one division in Germany and has never taken part in a war. On March 31, 1915, Liman appeared at the front , criticized the formation of the troops and ordered a retreat to rear positions.

April 24, 1915. Captain Faik explains to his subordinates that they must rid themselves of their inferiority complex towards the Western powers . The next day, the Entente powers attacked on water, on land and in the air. Kemal Bey tries to call Liman von Sanders to regroup troops, but the Marshal is on an inspection. At the front, a soldier curses the "sons of the Gentiles" who are trying to land.

Since Liman still cannot be reached, Kemal Bey takes the initiative and marches to the front with the 57th Regiment , playing an old Ottoman military march. Kemal is ready to do anything for the fatherland, even if he will be punished for it: "I order you not to attack, but to die!" The ANZAC troops are repulsed by his initiative .

In Istanbul (not Constantinople ) women members of the Red Crescent are demanding that a minister set up first aid courses. They too are ready to fight for the fatherland and to become soldiers. The minister promises to set up the courses.

In Veli and Ali's home village, an old woman asks to speak to the local commandant. She brings him two pairs of socks and explains that she knitted them for her husband and son who fell in Russia and Yemen . The commandant is touched by this gesture of helpfulness and gratefully accepts the socks. Meanwhile, the young, middle-class women in Istanbul are already knitting and sewing for the troops. They pack up gifts of love and do not forget to send bottles with Kolonya , which is needed for disinfection .

Groceries run out at the front. The Ottoman troops search for the abandoned trenches of the ANZAC troops and find cans of food, but also a special trench rifle; a combination of a rifle and a mirror-image trigger device that allows the rifle to be operated safely from the trenches. A soldier promises to recreate it immediately.

May 11, 1915. Entente naval forces threaten the Turkish positions again. The commander of the torpedo boat Muavenet-i Milliye , Nazmi Bey, agrees to destroy the British battleship HMS Goliath . At night he sneaks through the destroyer shield of the colossus and sinks it with three torpedo shots.

August 1915. Kemal Bey is now Colonel of Staff. The Australians attack in Suvla Bay. Kemal is hit by shrapnel , but his pocket watch intercepted it. An accompanying officer explains that Allah saved Kemal. The 12th division prevents an Australian success.

In Istanbul, Red Crescent nurses help treat the wounded. The Bayram Festival is celebrated at the front in the 57th Regiment . A British grenade strikes and kills commander Hüseyin Arni Bey and the staff. Mehmet Ali also falls.

August 21, 1915. The soldiers hand in their belongings and letters before they start the attack. They plant their bayonets on their rifles, infantry and cavalry attack the ANZAC troops together. The collision of the troop masses creates a (bloody) red crescent that fades into the Turkish flag . Numerous Turkish flags fly over Gallipoli. criticism

… “Let's fight the infidels!” - No, this is not the description of an Al-Qaeda combat video or an old German Nazi war propaganda film - this is the tone used in the current Turkish film “Çanakkale 1915” ... Originated Based on the novel and script by bestselling author Turgut Özakman, the film creates a battle painting in which individual stories have no place. What counts here is the heroism of the Turkish people as a whole - from the nurse in Istanbul to the soldier at the front, from the sock-knitting mothers at home to the captain who sacrifices himself for his men. Accordingly, the enemies remain faceless, especially the British and New Zealanders, who are only there to admire the courage of the Turks and to be insulted as "tearful" in their agony ...
