Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor , he is strongly associated with this club and is viewed by fans and clubs as one of the most important players in club history. With 328 first division appearances for Trabzonspor, he is the player with the sixth most frequent Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. As a classic left winger, he was known as Çalımcı İskender (in English: İskender the dribbler or Dribbler İskender ) because of his dribbling strength . Following his playing career, he switched to commentary and commented on the games of his former club in various print media. He writes for the daily newspaper Sabah .

Player career

society

Günen was born in the northern Anatolian city of Kastamonu and began playing club football in the youth department of his home club Kastamonuspor . In the summer of 1975 he was accepted into the first team of the third division and made it into the regular formation a little later. After his team missed relegation in the summer of 1975 and had to relegate to the amateur league, the talented players left the team. The second division team Ankara Şekerspor tried for Günen and signed him after a few rounds of talks. Günen quickly succeeded in asserting himself as a top performer in the new environment. For two seasons, he was one of the capital's most important players.

This led to the fact that several first division clubs tried to get Günens committed. Finally, the northeast Turkish club Trabzonspor managed to sign Günen. Trabzonspor was promoted to the 1st Lig in the first half of the 1970s and surprisingly became the first Anatolian team to become Turkish champions in the 1st Lig 1975/76 season . After the first championship, the team dominated Turkish football for about a decade and, in its second season, was able to win not only the championship but also the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup, all of the other trophies in Turkish football at the time. In the 1977/78 season the championship was missed and as a result a small revision was carried out on the squad. This revision meant that the championship could be won again. Günen joined the team in the summer of 1979. In his first season he played as a regular player at times and made a total of 17 league appearances. This season he won the Turkish Championship and the President's Cup with his team , an earlier version of today's Supercup. In his second season he won a regular place at the beginning of the season and kept it until the end of his career. The team ended its second season defending its title in the Turkish championship. After two championship years, the team played two more years for the championship, but awarded them with a few points in the last match days of the respective season. For this reason, the club invested in new players in the summer of 1983 and brought on aspiring young players such as Hasan Şengün , Hasan Vezir and Kemal Serdar . Günen formed a successful storm trio with the two newcomers Şengün and Vezir. In the 1983/84 season Trabzonspor delivered a head-to-head race for the Turkish championship with Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . Before the 26th matchday, Trabzonspor took first place in the table with just one point ahead of the two opponents. Already in the Saturday game of this match day Galatasaray lost 3-0 to Orduspor and enabled Trabzonspor to make a preliminary decision towards the championship with an away win against the other direct rivals Fenerbahçe. In the hard-fought game, which was sold out with 26,000 spectators, both teams played a thrilling game. Trabzonspor won the game 1-0 with a goal from Şengün in the 89th minute. With this victory, the club took an important step towards the championship. For the remaining game days, she confidently kept the point lead and reached the sixth and, for the time being, last championship in the club's history. With his three goals this season and numerous assists, Günen was instrumental in this success. With his team he also won the Turkish Football Cup this season and was also a Turkish double winner. The following seasons remained Günen with his team below expectations and could not win any title until the summer of 1990, except for the Prime Minister's Cup of the 1984/85 season. In the summer of 1990 he ended his career with a farewell game.

National team

Günen was nominated in his second season at Trabzonspor by coach Özkan Sümer in the squad of the Turkish national team and made his international debut on February 16, 1977 in a game of the Balkan Cup against the Bulgarian national team . After this first international match, Günen was no longer nominated for the national team for the next two years. It was not until September 1982 that he was replaced by the new national coach Coşkun Özarı . From then on he was one of the national players who were often nominated for five years. In addition to his work for the senior national team, Günen played once for the Turkish U-21 national team in 1983 . In his work for the U-21 selection, he was over 21 years old.

His last international match was on December 16, 1987 against the Yugoslav national team . In total, he played 13 times for the Turkish national team.
