Łęczna [ ˈwɛnʧna ] is a city in the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the Powiat Łęczna and the town-and-country municipality of the same name with about 23,500 inhabitants.

history

The first written mention of a place on the site of today's Łęczna comes from 1350 . 1467 after the original owner of the place had sold his property, was due to efforts of the castle Vogts January of Teczyn built on the river Wieprz and the mouth of the river Świnka a city. It received the name of the already existing parish Łęczna . The place received the city charter according to Magdeburg law and in 1582 the right to hold two annual markets . Large fires broke out in the city in 1564 and 1569 . In 1582 the owner, who had changed again in the meantime, was given the right to hold two more annual fairs. This made the city continue to grow. Large fires broke out again in 1616 and 1638 , but only insignificantly stopped the city's growth. The city profited from the brisk trade in which traders from other countries also took part. This is how the castle and the town hall were built. In 1693 and 1710 epidemics broke out in the city. In 1795 the city fell to the Habsburg Empire . In 1942, during the Second World War , a ghetto was established in the city . In the 1960s, coal mining began near Łęczna .
