Štiavnik (Slovak 1927 to 1946 Štavník ; Hungarian Trencsénselmec - until 1907 Styávnik ) is a municipality in Okres Bytča in the area of Žilinský kraj in Slovakia with about 4,000 inhabitants.
The municipality is located in the Javorníky Mountains on the Štiavnik stream of the same name, stretching from north to south. The area north of the town center is protected as part of the Kysuce nature reserve; there are also numerous individual settlements (Slov. Kopanice ). Veľký Javorník ( 1072 m nm ) rises about eleven kilometers northwest of the village . The city of Bytča is twelve kilometers to the southeast and Považská Bystrica is 20 kilometers to the south.
Štiavnik was first mentioned in writing in 1417, then in 1439 as Sczewnyk and was colonized by Wallachians. It belonged to the rule of Považská Bystrica. The population was engaged in agriculture, forestry and weaving.
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the districts Čierne, Predjastrabie, Štiavnik and Višňové.
