(7970) Lichtenberg is an asteroid of the central main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 6.171 (± 0.922) km .
(7970) Lichtenberg was named on December 8, 1998 after Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), the first German professor for experimental physics . Lichtenberg is considered to be the founder of the German-speaking aphorism . The proposal for a name was made by the Frankfurt nuclear physicist Karl-Ontjes Groeneveld , who is a brother of Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld. The asteroid of the middle main belt (2125) was named Karl-Ontjes after Karl-Ontjes Groeneveld . As early as 1935, a lunar crater on the northwestern front of the moon was named after Lichtenberg: Lichtenberg lunar crater .
