(9919) Undset is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered by the Swedish astronomer Claes-Ingvar Lagerkvist on August 22, 1979 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).

The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ). The timeless (not oscillating ) orbital elements of (9919) Undset are almost identical to those of eight smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 16.0, 16.6, 17.2, 17.5, 17.4, 17, 6, 18.0 and 18.5 compared to 15.0, asteroids: (48743) 1997 EE 57 , (149834) 2005 OT 14 , (217405) 2005 JQ 61 , (224066) 2005 NZ 27 , (238880) 2005 YE 32 , (323394) 2003 YF 116 , (373160) 2012 CU 51 and 2007 TF 123 .

The mean diameter of the asteroid was roughly calculated to be 2.521 (± 0.414) and the albedo to be 0.334 (± 0.045).

(9919) Undset was named on September 21, 2002 after the Norwegian author Sigrid Undset (1882–1949), who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 , "primarily for her powerful portrayals of medieval life in the (Scandinavian) north". Her trilogy of novels Kristin Lavransdatter (published in German translation as “Kristin Lavran's daughter”) is particularly emphasized in the dedication . The naming was based on suggestions from a competition that the radio show Nitimen of the Norwegian radio station NRK P1 held in cooperation with the Astrofestival 2001.

A Venus crater on the northern hemisphere of the Venus was named after Sigrid Undset in 1985 : Venus Crater Undset .
