1st Yugoslav Football League 1938/39

The 1st Yugoslav Football League 1939/40 was the 17th season of the highest Yugoslav division in men's football . It began on May 2, 1940 and ended on June 16, 1940.

Master became HŠK Građanski Zagreb .

When World War II began in parts of Europe, Croatian and Slovenian clubs left the Yugoslav Football Association in 1939 and joined the Croatian Football Association. The league now comprised two separate leagues, the Serbian and the Croatian-Slovenian. Both leagues acted as qualifiers for the finals of the 1st Yugoslav soccer league . The first three of both leagues then played together for the final championship for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . In 1946 the Yugoslav championship was restored.

From the Serbian league the Belgrade SK , FK Slavija Sarajevo and SK Jugoslavija qualified , from the Croatian-Slovenian league HŠK Građanski Zagreb , HAŠK Zagreb and Hajduk Split .

The six teams played against each other twice over ten match days, divided into a first half and a second half.
