The event
As early as 1965, at that time still on the old airfield track in Zeltweg, a sports car race was held, which four years later became the 1000 km race. In 1965 the race was the official Grand Prix of Austria , which Jochen Rindt won in a Ferrari 250LM . In 1968 this race, still the Austrian Grand Prix, was part of the World Sports Car Championship and was won by Joseph Siffert in a Porsche 908 .
The first 1000 km race was held in 1969 to mark the opening of the new Österreichring . However, the event was still officially called the Grand Prix of Austria. In 1970, Siffert and Brian Redman won the first “real” 1000 km race in a Porsche 917 . The last race was held in 1976 and ended with the victory of Dieter Quester and Gunnar Nilsson in the BMW 3.0 CSL .
