2K Games is one in January 2005 in Manhattan / New York based distribution label of computer games - Publishers Take 2 Interactive . The headquarters moved to Novato , California in 2007 .
Companies
2K Games comprises a total of three departments, 2K , 2K Sports and 2K Play . Full price games of all stripes (e.g. shooter, strategy), as well as sports games or casual games & edutainment software are sold under this name .
2K Games itself can be seen as the successor to Gathering of Developers , as 2K Games' first games should appear before Gathering, including, for example, Close Combat: First to Fight and Stronghold 2 .
2K Sports emerged from ESPN Video Games with the takeover of Visual Concepts and Kush Games. The 2K Play division , which was only founded in September 2007, emerged from Global Star Software , which was previously active as the casual games / low-price label Take 2 Interactives.
Internal development studios
- 2K China (founded in Shanghai and Hangzhou in mid-2006)
- 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks; acquired in January 2008)
- 2K Marin (founded December 2007; includes developers from 2K Australia and formerly 2K Boston who split off due to differences with leader, Ken Levine); 2010 Renaming and incorporation of 2k Australia (previously Irrational Games) into 2k Marin.
- Firaxis Games (acquired in November 2005)
- Irrational Games (acquired in January 2006 with two development studios in Boston and Canberra (Australia); 2007 split into 2k Boston and 2k Australia, 2010 renaming of 2k Boston to Irrational Games)
- Take-Two Licensing (formerly TDK Mediactive; part of Take 2 Interactive even before 2K Games was founded)
- Kush Games
- Power and Magic Development
- Venom Games
- Visual Concepts
Closed development studios
- Frog City Software (already part of Take 2 Interactive before 2K Games was founded; probably merged with Firaxis)
- Indie Built ( sold to Take 2 by Microsoft in December 2004 ; closed at the end of April 2006)
- PopTop Software (already part of Take 2 Interactive before 2K Games was founded; merged with Firaxis at the beginning of 2007)
Most employees were offered positions in other Take 2 studios. The merger of Frog City Software and Firaxis Games has never been officially confirmed, but is generally accepted: on the one hand by the discontinuation of the Snow project , on the other hand by the close connection between Frog City and PopTop Software and the fact that the studio's official website www.frogcity. com is no longer available.
