- May 11 : After six years of construction, the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great inaugurates a new metropolis on the Bosporus , which he names after himself: Constantinople (now Istanbul ). He had a seat of government built on the territory of the Greek trading city of Byzantion : a bulwark protected by a huge wall on the edge of the Roman-ruled Balkans and the Asian regions of the empire.
