78plus is an Austrian band from Vienna . The ensemble plays a mixture of electronic music , hits , chansons and jazz arrangements.

Band history

The band was founded in 2002 by the artist Otto Jekel and the multi-instrumentalist Stephan Sperlich. Another member was added with the singer Günther Berger. The originally open project grew into a band in 2004 with drummer Erwin Schober and double bass player Philipp Moosbrugger. The name is based on the playing speed of the shellac record, i.e. 78 min −1 . In 2004 the first single Sie will / Im Denkturm was released as a 10 '' LP . She will was also published on Sound Selection Vol. 11 , the sampler series of the radio station FM4 . In 2005 the debut album Im Denkturm followed .

In 2005, the band set the silent film Asphalt to music for the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg . In 2006, a Mozart biography from 1921, which was believed to be lost, was set to music for the Filmarchiv Austria and 3sat as part of the Mozart Year 2006 . In the same year the band was nominated for the FM4 Award , which is presented as part of the Amadeus Austrian Music Award .

In 2009 the band directed the music for the play What Crisis? of the Aktionstheater Ensemble and also played a part. In 2011, the ensemble and its cooperation with 78plus translated Zukunftsmaschine of Martin Gruber continued. The play premiered on March 13, 2011 in the Bregenz Festival and Congress House . This was followed by Working Pure , in which Sperlich and Berger worked together with the punk band The Result of Boredom .

In 2013 78plus took part in the musical Here Comes the Crook by the performance collective The Loose Collective. The piece is based on The Black Crook , which is generally considered to be the first musical ever.

Music genre

78plus sees itself as an artist collective, consisting of musicians who come from classical music , jazz instrumentalists and visual artists. The ensemble works with the shellac record collection of the Vienna-based artist Otto Jekel. The records were sampled and form the basis for new mostly German-language pieces. Musically, you are not tied to any style, the music oscillates between chanson , pop , jazz and drum & bass . In addition to the musical presentation, the visual is also important. The live performances are complemented by video art , appropriate stage design and costumes. The ensemble not only refers to the original shellac music of the early 20th century, but also has references to the 1980s, such as Roger Whittaker and Kraftwerk . 78plus sees itself as a discourse pop that tries to “put many types of music in new contexts”. The lyrics of the first album Im Denkturm go in a socially critical, political direction, while the lyrics of the second album Wandelwelt thematize the relationship between people and technology. A certain influence of the Viennese Schmäh is unmistakable in the texts.
