The Aarbach (also called Aar ) in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg , Northern Hesse , is an 8.8 km long, orographically right and southeastern tributary of the Itter in the Upland , the northeast foothills of the Rothaargebirge .

Course and catchment area

The Aarbach rises in the north-western part of Hesse in the Rothaargebirge at the interface of the mountain regions Upland and Sauerland . Its source is located a few kilometers south-southeast of Willingen on the northwest flank of the Auf'm Knoll mountain ( 738.4  m above sea  level ).

The Aarbach runs entirely in the Diemelsee Nature Park . In a wooded landscape it flows northwards past the mountains Emmet ( 742.5  m ) in the east and Hohe Pön ( 792.7  m ), in the west east past Wakenfeld, which belongs to Usseln (eastern part of Willingen) .

Around 250 m east of Wakenfeld, the brook crosses the Uplandbahn and Bundesstraße 251 . Then it flows - first the Schneeberg ( 726.3  m ) to the west and then the Orenberg ( 702  m ) a little to the east - further north to and through Schwalefeld , a north-eastern part of Willingen.

Almost 3 km below or north of Schwalefeld the Aarbach flows into the Diemel tributary Itter , which comes from the south-south-west .

The catchment area of the Aarbach is 9.006 km².

Watershed

The source of the Aarbach is located on the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed : Its water flows mainly northwards through the Itter and Diemel into the Weser , while the Wilde Aa , which rises a little further south and mainly flows eastwards, unites makes a more southerly detour through the Wilde Aa ("Aar"), Orke , Eder and Fulda to the Weser.
