Adam Pfaff

Johann Adam Pfaff (born March 1, 1820 in Cassel , † January 23, 1886 in Karlsruhe ) was a German-Swiss historian , journalist , high school teacher and publicist .

Life

The son of a gunsmith attended schools in Kassel. From 1843 he studied philology , philosophy and history at the Philipps University of Marburg and in 1848 he passed the state examination for teachers at learned schools. In the same year he received his doctorate . Pfaff was a supporter of the " small German solution " and worked in 1848/49 as an editor at the Neue Hessische Zeitung founded by Friedrich Oetker in Cassel . In 1850 he fled to Braunschweig , where he wrote for the Deutsche Reichs-Zeitung . From autumn 1851 he worked as a freelance writer and journalist in exile in Brussels .

From the spring of 1855 Pfaff taught history and geography at the canton high school in Schaffhausen, and from 1857 also Swiss constitutional law . At the same time he worked as editor of the daily newspaper for the canton of Schaffhausen and as a correspondent for the Hessische Morgenzeitung . In 1862 Pfaff was naturalized in Schaffhausen. In the same year he married Maria Catharina Freuler, daughter of Johann Jakob Freuler, the founder and first chief physician of the Schaffhausen Hospital. In 1864 the wife died shortly after the birth of their daughter Maria (1864–1931).

In 1878 he became a full professor of history at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic . A year later he became an honorary member of the Teutonia fraternity there .

Pfaff wrote u. a. a German story (4 vols., 1853–1864).
