The Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte is the only hut of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAK) and is located in the Glockner group at an altitude of 3454  m above sea level. A. The building, opened in 1880 and expanded several times, stands on the rocks of the Adlersruhe directly on the summit structure of the Großglockner .

This hut is the highest shelter in Austria. It is on the normal route to the Grossglockner and is accordingly well attended. In winter there is only a small emergency camp with four beds available.

At the refuge there has been a 3465  m above sea level since 2020 . A. The highest fully automatic weather station in Austria. This is also of great importance for the Tyrol avalanche warning service .

Naming

The hut is named after Archduke Johann of Austria , the patron of alpinism .

Building history

As early as 1800, a small shelter was built on the Adlersruhe by order of Count Salm, Prince-Bishop of Gurk.

In 1879 the ÖAK, founded the year before, acquired the property on the Großglockner and built a new hut, which was opened on August 18, 1880. Due to the rush to the Großglockner, Austria's landmark, extensions were made in 1891, 1895–1898 and 1907. A general renovation with an extension and the material ropeway from the Lucknerhütte could take place after the First World War 1926–1930. In 1960 the old building was again completely renovated and redesigned, and a further extension and a new mountain and valley station for the material cable car were built. In 1989/90 an extension and the sanitary facilities were built on the east side. In 2006, in order to meet the requirements of sustainable operation in the Hohe Tauern National Park , the hut was converted to a vegetable oil-powered combined heat and power plant with solar thermal and photovoltaic support.

In 2016, the extensive general renovation work, in which the subsoil of the foundation, which had become brittle due to the thawing of the permafrost , was re-consolidated.

The border between the federal states of Carinthia and Tyrol runs right through the hut.

Approaches

All approaches to the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte are glacier tours , which require appropriate equipment and caution.

From the Franz-Josefs-Höhe ( 2312  m ), which can be reached by car via the Großglockner High Alpine Road , an ascent over the Pasterzen glacier and the Hofmannskees leads to the hut in around 5 hours. The ascent is part of the Carinthian normal route to the Grossglockner.

The usual approach from East Tyrol starts at the Lucknerhaus ( 1984  m ), which can be reached from Kals am Großglockner via a toll road, and leads through the Ködnitztal via the Lucknerhütte and the Stüdlhütte to the Ködnitzkees. The hut can also be reached in 5–5½ hours via this and then a short rock passage.

Another, little-known ascent takes place via the Leitertal or the Salmhütte . On the left edge of a small crevice-free glacier you get up before you reach the ridge over medium-steep rocks secured with chains. On it or on the upper edge of the firn glacier (no crevices) to the hut.

Tour possibilities

Almost all mountaineers heading for the hut have the Großglockner as their destination via the normal route. Due to the favorable and high location, the highest mountain in Austria ( 3798  m ) can be reached from the hut (depending on the prevailing conditions) in 1½ to 2 hours. The key point is the exposed Glocknerscharte between the Kleinglockner and Großglockner, to which the easy summit rocks ( difficulty level I + ) connect. Furthermore, the hut is often used as a stopover in the descent from other routes to the Großglockner (Stüdlgrat, Pallavicini-Rinne).
