Adolf Riedlin (born April 3, 1892 in Laufen near Sulzburg , Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district , † September 9, 1969 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German painter.

Life

Born into a family of farmers and winegrowers, the middle of three brothers, Adolf Riedlin first completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Freiburg after finishing school , which he completed in 1910 with a journeyman's examination. From 1911 he attended the arts and crafts school in Karlsruhe . This was followed by two semesters at the Grand Ducal Art School in Karlsruhe in 1912/13 as a student of Professor Walter Georgi . Then Adolf Riedlin worked as a self-employed church painter .

In 1914 Riedlin became a soldier, in September 1914 he was seriously wounded, until the end of the war he returned to the front.

From 1919 to 1920 he was a student of Adolf Hölzel at the Stuttgart Art Academy . Riedlin was impressed by Hölzel: Today he is considered one of the pioneers of abstract painting and dealt with abstract designs even before Wassily Kandinsky .

From 1921 Riedlin gained experience as a freelance painter and moved to Baden-Baden in 1924, where he devoted himself to portraiture. In 1926 he returned to Laufen. During a five-month stay in Paris in 1928, he was influenced by the Surrealists and Cubism .

From 1930 he lived in Basel , Switzerland , only to return to Laufen in 1933. In 1937 he moved to Freiburg i. Br. About. In 1940 he had to do military service again and was taken prisoner by the Americans. After his release in 1946, he returned to his residence in Freiburg i. Br., Where he died in 1969. Riedlin was a member of the Badische Secession artist group .

Adolf Riedlin was one of the first painters in Baden who did not paint representationally : his depictions of Markgräfler landscapes and people in the style of expressive realism earned him the ostracism of National Socialist cultural policy; In Freiburg in 1937, the Reich Chamber of Culture confiscated and destroyed five of his pictures from the Augustinian Museum that were considered degenerate . On the other hand, a fresco he created in 1937 in the common room of the Freiburg gas works , which showed a column of workers with a Hitler salute, was changed after the war for denazification so that the raised hands were brought into a normal position by overpainting. The wall paintings preserved in the Lortzing School in Freiburg, built in 1953/54, amaze today's viewer with the typical Nazi motifs used by the horse tamers, naked men riding wild horses in the stairwell of a primary school.

Unprotected exposed to the elements and now freely accessible is under preservation standing fresco Riedlins over the orifice of a former iron ore lug at the Freiburg Schoenberg, illustrating two miners. Here, too, his ingratiation to the Nazi regime emerges in the motif, only the then presumably courageous choice of colors and the resolution of the image still somehow remind of the once presumed pioneer of Baden abstraction .
