In 1838 an Indian agency was established here to organize the resettlement of the local Indians to Kansas , which lasted until the agency closed in 1845. The settlement was built in the area around the agency in 1843, and it continued to exist even after the agency was closed and retained its name. The place was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1859.
