Agostino Valier
Agostino Valier (born April 7, 1531 in Venice , † May 23, 1606 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church . Valerio , Valiero , Valieri , Valerius or Velier are also mentioned as a surname .
Life
Agostino Valier was the eldest of four children of Alberto Valier and his wife Lucia Navagero. A brother of his mother was Cardinal Bernardo Navagero , his nephew Pietro Valier was also elevated to cardinal in 1621. With Bertuccio Valier and Silvestro Valier, two doges of the 17th century came from the family .
Valier studied Greek , Latin , humanitas and philosophy with Lazzaro Bonamico ; later theology , law and Hebrew at the Vatican Academy, which was founded by Charles Borromeo . At the University of Padua he received his doctorate in law and theology in 1554 . From 1558 he taught moral philosophy in Venice and belonged to the clergy of the Patriarchate of Venice .
On May 15, 1565 Agostino Valier was appointed Bishop of Verona . In his diocese he carried out reforms in accordance with the resolutions of the Tridentinum and from 1579, as an Apostolic Visitator , extended this to the dioceses of Istria , Dalmatia , Venice and Padua .
Pope Gregory XIII appointed him in the consistory of December 12, 1583 cardinal priest . The red hat and the titular church of San Marco were awarded to him on January 14, 1585. Agostino Valier stayed away from the conclave in 1585 when Pope Sixtus V was elected . He was from February 8, 1587 to March 14, 1597 Prefect of the Index Congregation . He took part in the first conclave in 1590 with the election of Pope Urban VII , as well as in the second conclave of the same year, in which Pope Gregory XIV was elected. Agostino Valier was also among the cardinals at the 1591 conclave , Innocent IX. elevated to pope; Furthermore, in 1592 he took part in the conclave from which Clement VIII emerged as Pope. From January 8, 1596 to 1597, Agostino Valier was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . He took part in both conclaves of 1605, in March with the election of Leo XI. and in May with the election of Paul V as Pope. On June 1, 1605, Agostino Valier opted for the cardinal class of the cardinal bishops and for the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . He was assigned to the Congregation for the Holy Office and the Index and was appointed examiner of the bishops. His nephew Alberto Valeri , titular bishop of Famagusta , was placed at his side as coadjutor with the right of succession to administer the diocese of Verona .
Agostino Valier died in Rome in 1606 and was buried there in his titular church, San Marco . Later his body was transferred to Verona and buried in the local cathedral.
