Abbot Alberich Denzler

Alberich Denzler SOCist (born December 11, 1759 in Baden AG ; † September 9, 1840 in Wettingen ) was abbot of the Wettingen monastery from 1818 to 1840.

Life

Denzler came in 1778 in the Cistercian - abbey Wettingen and was ordained a priest in 1784. After that he mainly worked as a theology lecturer: 1785 to 1790 in the Hauterive monastery , then with interruptions until 1832 in Wettingen. At times he was also employed as a vicar and pastor in Wettingen in the pastoral care of the pastor. In 1815 he was elected prior and in 1818 abbot. As such, he had some minor construction work carried out and the ceiling of the abbey church repainted. In 1827 the 600th anniversary of the monastery was celebrated.

In Denzler's last years of office and life the harbingers of the Aargau monastery dispute fell . The cantonal government constantly increased the tax demands on the monastery. In 1834 the monastery property was placed under state supervision, a ban on novices was imposed and the monastery school closed. In those years the aging and sick abbot was hardly able to exercise his office and to oppose the state coercive measures. He died in 1840 and was the last Wettinger abbot to be buried in the abbey church. Four months after his death, in January 1841, the monastery was forcibly abolished by the cantonal parliament and the monks were expelled from the canton.
