Johann Schnewly († November 25, 1539 ) was abbot of Wettingen Abbey .

Life

Johann Schnewly von Altstetten near Zurich was at the time of the change of monks to the Reformed faith in 1529 confessor in the Wurmsbach monastery on the upper lake of Zurich. After the Battle of Kappel (October 11, 1531), he was placed at the head of the few (four) confreres who remained Catholic by the victorious Catholic towns and held the first Catholic service again on November 25, 1531 in the monastery church. In 1532 he was appointed a conductor by the confederates and in the early summer of 1534 he was appointed abbot. He accepted new confreres and tried to improve the economic situation of the indebted monastery.

According to the Wettinger tradition, it was he who caused the great fire of the monastery on April 11, 1507 when a rocket stuck to the clapboard roof of the monastery when a fireworks display was set off.

He died on November 25, 1539 and was buried in the St. Bernard Chapel of the monastery church.
