Niklaus von Flüe SOCist , also: Nikolaus von Flüe (born February 21, 1598 in Sarnen as Wolfgang von Flüe ; † June 21, 1649 in Wettingen ) was a Swiss theologian and abbot of the Wettingen monastery of the Cistercians .

Vita

Wolfgang von Flüe was the son of Ensign Jakob von Flüe and the great-great-great-grandson of the Swiss national saint Niklaus von Flüe (brother Klaus). In 1612, on the recommendation of the Sarnen Council, he became a pupil at the monastery school Wettingen, in 1615 he made his profession there, took the religious name Niklaus and in 1616 took up a scholarship, of which he spent four years in Paris ; he may have previously been in Milan for three years . In 1623 he was ordained a priest and was under Abbot Schmid (r. 1594–1633) from 1624 to 1629 first professor of theology at the Wettinger home school. From 1629 to 1632 he was prior , from 1637 to 1641 the main waiter and from 1641 abbot of the Wettingen monastery. He was considered a highly talented singer, musician and composer.

He took care of the economic and legal situation as well as the internal design of the convent, for example in 1644 by buying back the ferry and the inn at the monastery. In 1649 there was a dispute with the city of Baden over jurisdiction over the Wettingen parish church . In 1649 he resigned from his position as abbot and died that same year. In the short time of his abbatical status , he brought the Wettinger Convent to full bloom with 36 monks and seven lay brothers.

There are three coats of arms of Abbot Nikolaus von Flüe . One is from 1642 and is now in Lenzburg Castle . A second is from 1643 and was brought back to the monastery in the mid-1980s. Today it hangs in the west wing of the cloister. The third disk, which dates from 1648, is an uninterrupted part of the monastery. All three show the two coats of arms of the von Flüe family and that of the Wettingen monastery side by side. The family coat of arms is adorned with a jumping ibex over mountain flames made of silver and two blue bars. In addition to Nikolaus von Myra and Bernhard von Clairvaux , Niklaus von Flüe and Karl Borromeo , who are particularly venerated in Obwalden, are personified , while the oldest disc depicts Our Lady and Saint Benedict .
