Albert von Holleben (General)

Albert Hermann Ludwig von Holleben (born April 24, 1835 in Erfurt , † January 1, 1906 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a Prussian infantry general and military writer.

Life

origin

His parents were the Prussian Rittmeister Wilhelm Karl Friedrich Bernhard Ludwig von Holleben (* July 26, 1802; † July 2, 1843) and his wife Louise, born von Selchow (* May 29, 1811; † January 3, 1886).

Military career

Holleben was educated in a cadet institution and on April 27, 1852 transferred as portepeefähnrich to the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot of the Prussian army . After becoming second lieutenant in 1853 , he worked as a teacher at the cadet house in Kulm between 1857 and 1859 . As prime lieutenant , Holleben took part in the war against Austria in 1866 . Awarded the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords, he was promoted to captain after the end of the war and appointed chief of the 2nd company. On March 10, 1870, he was transferred to the General Staff . For the duration of the mobile relationship on the occasion of the war against France , Holleben was active in the general staff of the 1st Guard Infantry Division in 1870/71 . There he became major on December 22, 1870 .

From 1872 to 1874 he worked in the General Staff of III. and between 1874 and 1878 in that of the X Army Corps . In 1878 he became Chief of the General Staff of the IV Army Corps . On September 16, 1881 he was promoted to colonel . From 1883 Holleben was department chief in the Great General Staff until he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Guard Corps on November 24, 1885 and promoted to major general on December 4, 1886 . In this function, Holleben was, among other things, a member of the study commission of the war academy and, from 1888, a commission for the revision of the drill regulations for the infantry. On January 18, 1887, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Guard Infantry Brigade . Two years later, in 1889, he was transferred to the general staff of the army as quartermaster and promoted to lieutenant general . From November 4, 1890 to April 17, 1893, Holleben commanded the 1st Guard Division in Berlin. He was then transferred to the army officers and on June 10, 1893 appointed governor of Mainz . In this capacity, Holleben received the character of General of the Infantry on January 27, 1894 . In approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposal on November 6, 1898 with the statutory pension .

In addition to his military obligations, he was also active as a writer.

family

Holleben had married Clara Schmeckel (* 1838) in Berlin on October 22, 1859. The son Wilhelm Hermann Ludwig (* 1860) emerged from the marriage.
