Albrecht von Sydow

Albrecht Wilhelm von Sydow (born August 14, 1799 in Potsdam , † July 18, 1861 in Magdeburg ) was a Prussian major general and knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

Albrecht was a son of the district administrator of the Dramburg district and Mr. auf Zietensier Rudolf von Sydow (1776–1814) and his wife Luise Christine, born von Berg (1783–1856). His father died as a Prussian lieutenant from the wounds he suffered in the battle of Dennewitz . The Prussian Legation Councilor Rudolf von Sydow (1805–1872) was his brother.

Military career

During the Wars of Liberation, on January 1, 1814, Sydow joined the 17th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer , was transferred to the Emperor Franz Grenadier Regiment as a portepeef ensign in mid-May 1815 and was promoted to second lieutenant at the beginning of October of the same year . For further training he was sent to the General War School in 1819/22 and then sent to Koblenz for a year to learn engineering . This was followed by a command to the topographic office in Berlin until 1828 . On June 14, 1829 he was promoted to prime lieutenant . From 1829 to 1833 Sydow was assigned to the Guard Sergeant Company. On March 30, 1836, he returned to the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment as a captain and company commander. He was promoted to major on July 11, 1844 and transferred to Görlitz as second in command of the 1st Battalion in the 3rd Guards Landwehr Regiment . On May 20, 1849, he was commissioned to lead the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg-Strelitz line battalion. Sydow was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 23, 1852 and appointed commander of the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment on September 22, 1852 . In this position he rose to colonel on March 22, 1853 . On April 4, 1857, he was transferred to the 25th Infantry Brigade as commander and promoted to major general on October 15, 1857.

On May 22, 1858, he was then transferred to the Federal Fortress of Luxembourg as commandant . In this capacity Sydow received the Knight's Cross of the 1859 Belgian Order of Leopold , the Lippe Military Merit Medal , the Officer's Cross of the Order of the Oak Crown and Waldeckische Medal . On the occasion of the festival of the Order, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in January 1860 . From June 12, 1860, Sydow was then in charge of the 7th Division , before he received a two-month vacation on May 13, 1861 to restore his ailing health. But he died on July 18, 1861 in Magdeburg.

Sydow married on May 30, 1832 in Lilienthal Marie de Brunnet-Chatillon (1809-1840). The couple had a son:

After the death of his first wife, he married Emma von Steinmetz (1803–1855), a daughter of General Karl Friedrich Franciscus von Steinmetz, on February 11, 1842 in Potsdam . The daughter Maria (* 1843), honorary canoness at Heiligengrabe Abbey, emerged from the marriage.

His third and last wife was on November 19, 1856 in Schorbus Klara von Schmieden (1812-1878).
