Alexander May (director, 1970)

Alexander May (born December 16, 1970 in Trier ) is a German theater director and director for drama , music theater and audio books .

Life

Alexander May first completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor and stone mason and worked in this profession for several years. He worked as a stone restorer in the antique collection of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin .

In 1999 he founded the independent theater group “Fragment”, with which he realized numerous productions in Berlin. In parallel, he worked as an assistant director with Claus Peymann , Thomas Langhoff and Christoph Schlingensief, among others .

From 2001 to 2005 he was assistant director at the Bavarian State Theater in Munich , where he worked with Barbara Frey and Jan Bosse , among others . In 2005 he staged Genua 01 by Fausto Paravidino in the Munich stables . Alexander May has been working as a freelance director since 2005.

He has staged at the Bavarian State Theater , Schauspiel Essen , Theater Trier , Theater Augsburg , State Theater Nuremberg , Theater Osnabrück , Schauburg Munich , Chamber Opera Munich and at the Salzburg Festival .

In 2011 he staged the generation drama Eine Familie by the American playwright Tracy Letts at the Trier Theater . His production was nominated in 2012 as the audience favorite for the “Theater Mask”, the culture award of the “Society of Friends of Trier Theater”. In the 2014/15 season he realized Aeschylus ' family tragedy Die Orestie at the Trier Theater .

From the 2015/16 season he worked as artistic director and stage manager at the Pforzheim Theater.

In the transition season 2017/18 he took over the duties of chief dramaturge and director as a member of the theater management of the Trier theater .

From 2018 to 2020 he worked as deputy director , chief dramaturge and director at the Rheinisches Landestheater Neuss .

Alexander May has been staging the annual arena show of the Kaltenberg knight tournament with over 200 participants since 2017 . The event takes place in the Kaltenberger Arena in front of over 10,000 spectators.
