Alfred Berger , since 1878 Freiherr von Berger (born April 30, 1853 in Vienna ; † August 24, 1912 there ) was an Austrian dramaturge , theater director and writer.
Alfred Berger was the son of Johann Nepomuk Berger and attended the Schottengymnasium in Vienna, then studied first law and then philosophy and literature.
On July 4, 1878, Emperor Franz Joseph I and his brother Wilhelm Berger awarded him “ on the basis of the fact that their father Dr. Johann Berger, Real Secret Councilor and Minister as a Knight of the Order of the Iron Crown, 1st class, in accordance with the Order's statutes, acquired the claim “the hereditary baron class. Since both had exclusively female descendants, their family name has expired.
Berger taught from 1887 initially as a private lecturer for philosophy and aesthetics in Vienna, from 1896 he was professor for philosophy and aesthetics at the University of Vienna .
After he was the first director of the newly founded Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg from 1899 to 1909 , he gained fame from 1910 as director of the Vienna Burgtheater , where he performed modern contemporary works by Henrik Ibsen, Oscar Wilde and Arthur Schnitzler in addition to the Weimar Classics set the game board.
His writings (novellas, poems) were published in 1913 in a three-volume compilation by A. Bettelheim and K. Glossy . His works on theater and literature were published in 1992 as selected dramaturgical and literary critical writings.
Alfred von Berger had been married to the Viennese actress Stella Hohenfels , née Loderbang (1857–1920) , since 1889 , who was not allowed to appear there during his time as director at the Burgtheater, but did anyway, solely because of her existence and her own locked artist's wardrobe the replacement of numerous roles blocked. Berger's grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 32 A, number 46).
