Alfred Arthur Konstantin von Briesen (* 29. July 1849 in Berlin , † 12. November 1914 in Włocławek ) was a Prussian general of the infantry in the First World War .

Life

origin

He came from the noble family Briesen and was the son of the later Prussian Lieutenant General Louis Arthur von Briesen (1819-1896) and his wife Cäcilie Hulda, née von Wedel (1823-1863).

Military career

After his upbringing in his parents' house and a visit to the cadet corps , Briesen joined the 7th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 54 of the Prussian Army on June 13, 1866 as a porter ensign . He was used for a short time in the war against Austria and was promoted to second lieutenant on September 6, 1866 after the peace treaty . From February 1, 1870, he acted as adjutant of the 1st battalion and took part in this position during the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles near Gravelotte and the sieges of Metz and Paris . For the battle near Vaux Briesen was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

From October 1, 1872, Briesen graduated from the War Academy for three years and in the meantime became Premier Lieutenant on November 12, 1874 . In the further course of his military career he rose to colonel and was from May 22, 1899 to March 21, 1903 commander of the fusilier regiment "Queen Victoria of Sweden" (Pomeranian) No. 34 in Stettin . This was followed by his appointment as commander of the 71st Infantry Brigade in Gdansk and shortly thereafter his promotion to major general . On October 2, 1906, Briesen was initially charged with the command of the 35th Division in Graudenz and on October 16, 1906, he was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of this large unit . In this capacity he was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and the Grand Commander of the Order of Franz Joseph . On March 5, 1910, Briesen was put up for disposal with the statutory pension in approval of his resignation . After his departure, he received the Order of the Crown, First Class, on March 22, 1910 in recognition of his longstanding services . and on September 10, 1910 the character of General of the Infantry.

With the outbreak of World War I , Briesen was reused and appointed commander of the 49th Reserve Division . During the Battle of Łódź he fell on November 12, 1914 near Wloclawek in Russian Poland .

family

He married Olga von Kleist (1847–1938) on April 11, 1882 . She was the widow of Otto Adalbert von Schwerdtner-Pomeiske (1844-1880). His son Kurt (1886–1941) was also a general of the infantry and fell on the Eastern Front during World War II .
