Alois von Egger-Möllwald

Alois von Egger-Möllwald (also: Alois Egger or Alois Egger von Möllwald , born January 5, 1829 in Flattach im Mölltal ; † March 16, 1904 in Lovran , Volosko district , Istria ) was a school director, Germanist and member of the Austrian House of Representatives .

Life

Alois von Egger-Möllwald was the son of the farmer of the same name Alois Egger († 1852). He attended elementary school in Flattach until 1840 , attended a grammar school in Lienz from 1840 to 1841 and the academic grammar school in Klagenfurt from 1841 to 1847 . From 1847 to 1849 he attended philosophical classes at the Klagenfurt Lyceum. Between 1849 and 1850 he studied law , from 1850 philosophy at the University of Graz and from 1853 to 1854 at the University of Vienna . In 1855 he passed the teaching examination for history , geography and German for high schools. In 1872 received his doctorate he became Dr. phil. in Tübingen . In 1851 he was a supplement at the state high school, in 1852 a teacher at a private school in Graz . In 1854 he was a supplement at the State High School in Olomouc ( Moravia ). In 1855 he was a teacher at the State High School in Laibach ( Krain ). From 1857 to 1874 he was professor of German, geography and history at the academic high school in Vienna , although he was on leave from 1869 to 1873. During this time, from 1869 to 1870, he taught German to the heir to the throne, Archduke Rudolf . Until 1873 he taught German, geography and history to Archduchess Gisela . For these two activities he was ennobled in 1874 . In 1877 he was director of the St. Anna School for Teachers in Vienna and in 1878 director of the grammar school of the Theresianum and vice director of the Theresian Academy in Vienna. in 1893 he retired , but at the same time became 2nd President of the 42nd Assembly of German Philologists and School Men in Vienna.

In 1860 he was a founding member of the association "Die Mittelschule" in Vienna, an association of professors at the grammar schools and secondary schools in Austria. Until 1878 he was also chairman of this association several times.

He was also the editor of reading books for German lessons.

Alois von Egger-Möllwald was Roman Catholic and had been married to Laura Moser since 1863, with whom he had at least four sons and one daughter. He was the father-in-law of the painter Albin Egger-Lienz . Möllwaldplatz was named after him (see list of street names in Vienna / Wieden ).
