Altenau is a district of the municipality of Saulgrub in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

geography

The landscape of the parish village of Altenau is bordered by the Ammer in the west. Here the river valley meanders in a pristine landscape through the moraines of the Ice Age . Extensive moors shape the area along the river. The Altenauer Moor north of the village is an upland moor that is almost exclusively nourished by rainwater and is still open at its highest point. The Kochel-Filz , a moorland area in the direction of Unterammergau, connects to the Altenau district to the south. Altenau is located in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park .

history

The Christianization of the Ammertal began in the 8th century. The Ammergau is mentioned for the first time in the 9th century as the “small district of Baierns”. The Guelphs owned several allodies here .

Altenowe is mentioned for the first time in 1270 . The basic word of the first name is Middle High German ouwe or owe . This means land surrounded by water . The defining word is the adjective old. It is either a reference to the personal name Alto or, more likely, to a very old settlement .

The place was on an old Roman military road from Partenkirchen to Augsburg. Several tumuli, burial mounds, were in the vicinity of Altenau. During leveling, shards of dishes, small horseshoes and copper coins were found.

There were three farms in “Altenowe” in 1270. These had to pay taxes to the ducal office of Ammergau. In the 14th century, in 1571 and 1789, residents of Altenau were mentioned in connection with taxes. A cattle market on a meadow by the Halbammer also attracted attention in the area on the Sunday before the birth of Mary and from 1780 on the Sunday before Pentecost.

The chronicle of the Steingaden monastery reports a great famine in 1816.

The people on the 22 properties in Altenau lived from agriculture until 1860. That changed in 1848. Count Dürckheim from Steingaden built a sawmill with outbuildings near Unterogg. Now the farmers had the option of a sideline through transport services. The Bavarian state acquired this property as early as 1860 and set up the Unterogg Forestry Office there. In addition to the haulage service, additional money could now be earned by working in the forest, such as rafting on the Ammer and Halbammer until 1948.

Around 1870, the Kirsch & Söhne company built a steam saw on the Ammerbrücke. With the influx of workers with families, the place enlarged considerably. In 1910 the saw burned down. It was rebuilt next to the train station the following year.

In 1899 more jobs were created when the rail link from Murnau to Oberammergau was completed . The power plant Kammerl supplied the electricity for Germany's first electric railway line with water from the Ammer. There was now an alternative means of transport for the raw material wood and electric light for the residents.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Originally, the majority of the population lived from dairy farming on existing alpine pastures. Together with forestry, it was the most formative human use of the landscape. A third source of income was added by opening up for tourism. This decreased more and more when the last inn closed.

In order to make the place more attractive for tourism and to strengthen the village community, the Altenauers want to revive their old inn with the campaign A village becomes host . The Zur Post building in the center of town next to the church and school, which has been vacant for almost 10 years, is to be bought, renovated, rebuilt and managed again together. The Bayerische Rundfunk accompanied this action.

In 2013, numerous Altenauers joined together to form two cooperatives . The Dorfsaal cooperative consists of 126 Altenauers. She should be responsible for the management, use and administration of the hall. The task of the 13 Altenauers in the property cooperative will be to lease the restaurant and host's apartment.

traffic

The federal highway 23 from Peiting to Garmisch-Partenkirchen leads past the place.

Altenau is connected to the rail network through the stop at the train station. The single-track Ammergaubahn branches off the Munich – Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway in Murnau am Staffelsee . It runs every hour between Murnau and Oberammergau. Altenau also has a regular bus connection through a stop on the RVO (line 9606).
