The Ammergau Alps Nature Park is a 227 km² nature park on the edge of the Upper Bavarian Alps. On July 27, 2017, the region was declared a nature park by the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection.

The nature park encompasses the communities of Oberammergau , Unterammergau , Ettal , Saulgrub / Altenau, Bad Kohlgrub and Bad Bayersoien as well as the community-free area of ​​Ettaler Forst in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district . The area of ​​the nature park is particularly characterized by five landscapes:

Mountain landscape

The natural park comprises the north-eastern part of the bunting mountains , the Flyschberge high Minion and Hornle-Aufackermassiv with Laber and largely jungmoränenüberdeckte Faltenmolasse between Unternogg and Echelsbacher bridge . He has a share in the Kalkhochalpen, the pre-Alps and the Ammer-Loisach hill country. The Lech foothills are affected on the eastern edge.

Wild river landscape

A large part of the near-natural habitats in the nature park area lies in the forests. They contain the entire spectrum of forest location types and societies in the northern peripheral Alps. It ranges from the peat-forming alder quarry forest of the moraine and boggy gray alder -spruce quarry forest in the flysch to mixed mountain forests, some of which are not influenced by forestry, to the xerothermal carbonate pine forest on the west and south-facing steep slopes of the Kieneck and Kofel , as well as the subalpine spruce forests in the ridges.

  • Development of suitable parts of the landscape for recreation and sustainable enjoyment of nature, as far as the resilience of the natural balance and the landscape allow this.

  • Realization of the goals and principles of nature conservation and landscape management in accordance with the respective statutory ordinances in the designated protected areas and in the Natura 2000 areas in accordance with the respective conservation goals .
  • Sustainable protection and preservation of the cultural and natural landscape through appropriate environmental education measures.

The Ammergau Alps Nature Park comprises the area of ​​the municipalities of Oberammergau, Unterammergau, Ettal, Saulgrub / Altenau, Bad Kohlgrub and Bad Bayersoien as well as the municipality-free area of ​​Ettaler Forst. The tourism organization of these six places is the Ammergauer Alpen GmbH. The aim of this association is to bring guests closer to the wealth and diversity of the region. In 2018, the region recorded more than 806,000 overnight stays and over 238,000 arrivals.

Offers in the region

winter

In the valleys of the Ammergau Alps between Bad Bayersoien, Bad Kohlgrub, Saulgrub / Altenau, Unterammergau, Oberammergau, Ettal, and Linderhof Castle, there are widely branched and mostly very snow- reliable cross-country trails in winter . Every year on the first weekend in February, the famous König-Ludwig-Lauf takes place here between Ettal, Linderhof Castle and Oberammergau. The skiing offer ranges from family-friendly ski areas to the steepest freeride slope in Germany. The region is also known for leisurely snowshoe or winter hikes and ski tours.

summer

There is a multitude of offers in summer. The hiking options range from leisurely tours, which are also suitable for families, to difficult mountain tours. But there are also some signposted routes for cyclists and mountain bikers. On the piston there is an active arena with a climbing forest, alpine coaster and adventure playground.
